Telo Tulku Rinpoche
Telo Tulku RinpocheTelo Tulku Rinpoche was born on October, 27th, 1972, to a family of Kalmyk emigrants in the USA. At four years of age, the future Supreme Lama of Kalmykia declared to his parents the desire to become a monk. When he was six, he had an opportunity to meet His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, who advised that the boy be sent to training at the Tibetan monastery of Drepung Gomang in India. He spent 13 years there, studying Buddhist philosophy under the direction of outstanding Tibetan teachers. In the late 1980s, during his days of training at the monastery, he was recognized as the new reincarnation of the great Indian, sacred Tilopy, who was twice embodied in Inner Mongolia and three times in Mongolia.

In 1991, Telo Tulku Rinpoche arrived for the first time to Kalmykia as a part of a delegation of the Dalai Lama. The first meeting with his historical native land was followed by an invitation to head the process of spiritual revival for the steppe republic, which was in great need of his knowledge and spiritual experience.

In 1992, Telo Tulku Rinpoche was elected the Shadzhin-llama (the Supreme llama) of Kalmykia. During the last years of his management, over 30 Buddhist temples were build. These temples were destroyed in the days of the Soviet Union. Since 2005, Telo Tulku Rinpoche has resided in the main temple of Kalmykia «the Gold monastery of Buddha Shakyamuni,» which is identified as a largest Buddhist temple in both Russia and Europe.
