Tibetan man in exile says he will wear only traditional

Celebrating the 80th birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, a Tibetan man this week said he is planning to wear only traditional Tibetan dresses for a year.

"Today, in the darkest period of Tibetan history, it is the duty of every Tibetan to preserve our culture, language and tradition," he added saying, "living as "a diligent life based on the ethics is very crucial."

As an individual Tibetan, Jampa said he "will try every effort towards this monumental obligation. I have a plan to wear the only traditional Tibetan dresses for a whole year beginning on 6th July, 2015" which, he describes "the joyous and auspicious occasion of His Holiness the Dalai Lama's 80th Birthday."

"This humble effort in the great Lhakar movement will continue till next 6th July, 2016. This is a year-long Lhakar project."

"I dedicate this little effort to convey the profound gratitude of His Holiness The Dalai lama's visionary leadership and contributions in the global peace through promotion of the universal responsibility, religious harmony, love and compassion," he said, adding "His Holiness The Dalai Lama's achievements are unparalleled and historic."

He said that the "traditional dresses will be designed and guided" by Phurbu Tsering, who is a designer of the traditional Tibetan dress based in Dharamshala.

According to his statement, Ngawang Jampa was born in Soti village, Kham Daya County, Tibet, where as a child he studied "Tibetan language, literature, and philosophy."

After escaped into exile to India in 1993, he joined Rato Monastery in south India, where he continued his "Buddhist studies." Later he joined college for Higher Tibetan Studies based near Dharamshala, where he received his "BA in Tibetan language and Literature in 2010."

He taught "Tibetan language at schools and monasteries in Spiti valley in 2009 and 2010." Jampa also wrote several articles about Tibet published in various Tibetan magazines and newspapers. He was elected as President of Daya Welfare association for three consecutive years.

After serving as editor the "The Bhoti" Newspaper in 2013, he was awarded scholarship from department of education. He currently works as "a researcher for History of Traditional Khampa Region of Tibet."
